New couples dance lessons starting in January 2026

If you have always wanted to dance, now is a great time to get started! We have new courses starting in January 2026 for both adult Latin and adult Ballroom. There is a free taster evening at Danceworks Devon on Monday, 5th January at 19:30, so you can come along and preview what’s on offer. There’s no need to book; just turn up.
Dancing is a great hobby to take up as a couple, so if you both have a resolution to get out more and improve your fitness, then why not give it a go?
At Danceworks Devon, we have many years of experience teaching couples how to dance. It really doesn’t matter if neither of you are “natural” dancers; everyone can learn to dance! Don’t worry if one of you is more hesitant than the other – we find that often one person gets “dragged along” to their first lesson, but they are often the one that becomes totally addicted to dancing in a very short space of time.

Reasons to take up dancing

  1. It’s really good for your fitness! You will burn calories, boost your metabolism and get your heart working
  2. It’s great fun – it puts a smile on your face and there are many social events you can get involved in
  3. Spending time as a couple and working on a shared goal will improve your relationship. Co-operation is essential when dancing, and you will have to work as a team. Plus, it’s a great hobby that you can do together
  4. It’s good for your brain. Dancing improves your mood and cognitive skills, such as visual recognition and quick decision-making. Dancing also helps to reduce stress, increase levels of the feel-good hormone serotonin, and develop new neural connections, especially in regions of the brain involved in executive function, long-term memory, and spatial recognition

Important tips for couples

Be kind; dance sensitively with your partner

Make sure you dance with your partner to a level where they are comfortable. Never try to dominate or show off. The couples that look best on the dance floor are those that look like a team. Make sure that both of you feel really relaxed. Have fun together; make sure you laugh and don’t take it all too seriously (at least at first)…

Look like you are enjoying yourself

Dancing is fabulous for building your relationship. The way you look at your partner whilst dancing is just as important as the steps you’re doing. You don’t even need to be good at dancing to get the benefits listed above. Have you ever watched a couple dance that are not perfect dancers but you just can’t take your eyes off them? Chances are, it’s because they look like they are having a whale of a time!

Be consistent

Sometimes, you probably won’t feel much like dancing. But go anyway. Nothing improves you mood and your outlook more that a spin around the dance floor to some of your favourite tunes. You will find you learn much faster if you attend classes consistently each week, and practice in between at the many social dances we hold here at Danceworks Devon. Sometimes you might have a bad week, but keep trying and you will find that things start to fall into place very quickly.
